Thomas Meuwissen

Thomas Meuwissen (b.1966) was trained at the British Newark School of Violin Making and  perfected his skills with Premysl Špidlen in Prague and Fréderic Chaudière in Montpellier. He now lives and works in Brussels and has been the ‘violin-maker in residence’ at the Royal Conservatory since 1993.
Since 1987 Thomas has been working exclusively on the production of high quality violins, violas and cellos. His work includes antiqued copies of instruments by old masters. Thomas’ many years of experience as violin maker and daily contact with musicians, enable him to consistently produce instruments of the highest sound quality as well as perform effective adjustments to the sound of clients’instruments.

His instruments were awarded at various international violin making competitions:

  • Strad Cello and Bow Making Competition, Manchester (Silver, 2007)

  • Concorso Antonio Stradivarius (two Distinctions, 2003)
  • Concours de lutherie et d’archèterie de Paris (Bronze, 1999)

Over the years, Thomas Meuwissen has built up an international clientele and his instruments are played by soloists, including Igor Oistrakh, Vadim Repin and Maria Kliegel.
His instruments are held in several private and public collections: Royal Conservatory Brussels (Belgium), Beckett Collection (U.K.), Muziekinstrumentenfonds (Netherlands), Dextra Musica (Norway).
